Sling TV is here…will you get it?

Sling TV is a new $20/month live TV package that streams channels to your TV, mobile devices and computers…but the question is: will it get people to cancel their cable subscriptions, or, even more difficult, get people who’ve never paid for cable to start?

Cnet has a good “Everything you need to know” article but the big takeaways are:

  • $20/month for ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, ABC Family, and CNN
  • There are additional $5/month packages like “Kids Extra” and “News & Info Extra” for a few more channels including Disney Junior, Baby TV and Cooking Channel, HLN, Bloomberg TV respectively
  • No Recording and DVR capabilities, but you can pause, rewind, and fast forward (just not past what you haven’t yet watched
  • There are commercials that you can’t skip

Dish (owners of Sling TV) are hoping to grab some of the marketshare from cable and appeal to those who never had cable, but it’s not yet clear if both the technology and the content that they’ve put together will be the right mix to take off.
