New Orleans: 9 Years Later, Rebuilding Lives

New Orleans resident, Vance Vaucresson, had a family, a thriving business and stability until Hurricane Katrina left him and his family with nothing.

Thursday night on Soul of the South, we told you how Vaucresson had to learn to put his pride to the side and ask for help for his child and pregnant wife.

Tonight, we continue his story as he surveys the damage to his business and his childhood home, as well as why he is still struggling today, nine years later.

Soul of the South’s Vickie Newton picks up the story from here, in Part 5 of our special series, “New Orleans: 9 Years Later, Rebuilding on Higher Ground.”

One of the organizations helping Katrina survivors, like Vaucresson, get back on their feet…even today…is Habitat for Humanity – New Orleans.

Habitat helps low income families who may not be able to get a bank loan attain their dream of home ownership.

Instead of a down payment, families contribute 350 hours of “sweat equity” to the building of their homes…while learning construction and repair skills necessary maintain their homes.

Since Katrina, Habitat has built or rehabbed 557 homes in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes.

There are 17 homes currently under construction.

And, volunteers have gutted over 2,400 homes in the New Orleans area.

Soul of the South is partnering with Habitat to bring more awareness to their continued mission to build homes for families.
