Marissa Alexander Looks to the Future

The Florida mother who became a rallying cry for the unfair application of the law is free and home with her three children.

Marissa Alexander will serve the remaining two years of her plea deal under house arrest. In 2010 Alexander fired a shot in the direction of her estranged husband. A jury found her guilty of attempted murder and sentenced her to a mandatory 20 years in prison.

Alexander used a “stand your ground” defense. A national debate ensued after George Zimmerman shot and killed 17 year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida and used the “stand your ground” defense and a Florida jury acquitted him of all charges. Critics raised the question: why did a “stand your ground” defense not win Alexander’s freedom even though her husband was not injured? Yet, an unarmed teenager had been shot and killed by Zimmerman, and Zimmerman walked free.

Analysts pointed to Alexander’s gender and her race as explanations for the disparity in the judicial process. It took four years, but earlier this week, Alexander’s case was resolved with a plea agreement.

She talked about the ordeal in this interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
