On the stage in the spotlight musicians John Legend and Common clutched their Golden Globes, awarded for the song “Glory” from the soundtrack for “Selma” the movie.

The movie is moving thousands into the theater for a history lesson on the significance of Selma, Alabama in the African American struggle for voting rights. Selma made its way into the history books for the beating dozens of Blacks endured as they crossed the Edmond Pettis Bridge on March 7, 1965 in an effort to draw attention to the unfair voting rules found in some Southern cities. It became known as “Bloody Sunday.

Oprah Winfrey is a member of the cast and one of the movie’s producers. David Oyelowo delivers a powerfully memorable performance as Dr. Martin Luther King. And, Ava DuVernay is garnering applause for her directorial excellence despite being passed over for an Academy Award nomination.
