Celebrating Maya Angelou

Friends, family, dignitaries and dozens of others gathered in the gym of Lafayette County High School in Stamps, Arkansas on Saturday to remember and celebrate the life of Dr. Maya Angelou.

Janis Kearney, the chairperson of the Celebrate Maya! Project read a letter from President Clinton, as Dr. Akasha Hall read a proclamation from Governor Beebe, declaring October 18th, 2014 “Celebrate Maya Day.” Angelou’s youngest grandson, Elliott Jones, was also there and made some remarks on behalf of the family, while several of her friends shared their own memories of her.

Plans were also announced to dedicate a statue of Angelou at Lake June in the Spring of 2015.
